Our division was founded in 1957 by Dr. Arno Motulsky. Our research faculty cover most areas of Human and Medical Genetics and modern molecular biology. Fifteen members of our faculty are Diplomats of the American Board of Medical Genetics. Six are members of the National Academy of Sciences.
We train individuals for academic careers in human and medical genetics using the most advanced concepts and techniques of genetics and cellular/molecular biology.
Research
Members of the Medical Genetics faculty conduct research in most areas of human and medical genetics and modern molecular biology. We work in a wide range of settings within the University of Washington, the Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System, and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center.
Our faculty and affiliates include one Nobel laureate, fifteen diplomates of the American Board of Medical Genetics, six members of the National Academy of Sciences, and two members of the Institute of Medicine.

Medical Genetics offers a number of different training opportunities. Our program is designed to train individuals for academic careers in human and medical genetics. The philosophy of the program is to use the most advanced concepts and techniques of genetics and cellular/molecular biology in the elucidation of problems in human and medical genetics. Research as well as clinical competence is stressed. Research activities span a wide spectrum of topics in basic and clinical human genetics.
Genetic Medicine Clinics
Adult Genetics Clinic
The UWMC Genetic Medicine Clinic offers consultation with board-certified Genetic Counselors and physicians who are Clinical Geneticists with advanced expertise in many areas of Adult genetics and the genetics of common diseases including specialties in cancer genetics, neurogenetics, connective tissue disorders, dermatologic genetics, Turner syndrome, cardiovascular genetics, and autism genetics, and is home to a Huntington Disease Center of Excellence.
We offer an interdisciplinary approach to the diagnosis, treatment and management of patients and their families with known or suspected genetic conditions. We see patients of all ages from infancy through adulthood. We provide risk assessment, genetic counseling and testing, and management plans for family members who have been informed that a relative has been diagnosed with a genetic condition.
