Overview

Our program will be offering virtual interviews for this season via Zoom. Virtual interviews provide equitable experiences, decrease medical students’ time away from clinical training and significantly decrease the impact of travel.

The Seattle Children's Pediatric Residency Program will host a Second Look in Seattle on February 9, 2027 and we plan to offer a Pediatric-Medical Genetics session during the event. Further details will be provided to applicants that are invited to interview.

Our program is participating in the ERAS supplemental application for academic year 2027-2028 appointments, with adherence to the AAMC code of conduct. Please see our How to Apply section for more details.

Consider reading Virtual Interview: Applicant Preparation Guide and Prep for Success in your Virtual Interview from the AAMC.

All first-year positions at UW/Seattle Children's are selected through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). Each track within the Pediatric Residency Program has separate NRMP program codes.

required application materials

  1. All applications to our residency program must come through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). A complete application consists of:
    • The ERAS Common Application form
    • Medical school transcript
    • Personal statement
    • USMLE report (Step 1)
    • COMLEX level 1 report or MCCQE part 1 report
    • MSPE
    • Letters of recommendation
  2. We will consider your application complete and ready for review and invitation with receipt of two letters of recommendation prior to November 1. We ask for a total of three letters of recommendation to be submitted by December 31. A letter of recommendation from your Chair is not required. We do not have any requirements as to the authors of the letters of recommendation, though we do suggest that they are from faculty you have worked with during your medical school time and at least two letters of recommendation are from clinical time.

USMLE Step 1, COMLEX level 1, or MCCQE part 1 must be passed prior to applying and we advise that USMLE Step 2CK/COMLEX level 2 be passed before the match. We do not accept applications from applicants who have not successfully passed USMLE Step 1, COMLEX level 1, or MCCQE part 1 and we do not have a minimum USMLE Step 1, COMLEX level 1, or MCCQE part 1 score for application consideration.

Eligibility criteria

We accept applications from the following types of medical schools:

  • Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME)–accredited medical schools in the U.S. or Canada
  • American Osteopathic Association (AOA)–accredited colleges in the U.S.
  • International medical schools (see requirements)

All applicants must have graduated from medical school no more than two years prior to the residency start date. Exceptions are made for applicants participating in another ACGME-accredited residency program, fellowship program, other post-graduate education, or currently practicing direct, medical patient care (observerships do not count as current clinical practice, and we are generally looking for on average 6 or more months per year of clinical practice for a time period to qualify as a period of clinical practice).

MD/PhD applicants who have been engaged in research activities for greater than two years since graduation are eligible to apply for the program and are encouraged to contact program leadership for eligibility inquiries. Other applicants are encouraged to contact the program individually if there are questions about eligibility.

selection

Our program uses the following criteria when making their rank list:

  • We have a holistic admissions process that emphasizes applicant experiences, background, leadership potential and lifelong learning. Our program looks for applicants that value adaptability, collaboration, communication, diversity, equity, excellence, humility, innovation, integrity and teamwork.
  • Our program does not discriminate applicants on the basis of race, culture, ethnicity, nationality, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, spirituality, age, veteran status, socioeconomic status and mental and physical status.
  • Only applicants who have applied through NRMP will be considered for R1 positions in our program.

interview details

Applicants invited to interview will participate in two separate half-day interview sessions: one specifically tailored for pediatrics training, and one specifically tailored for medical genetics training.
